Zero Energy House

As the name implies, the energy generation in the building is equal to the energy consumption throughout the year. It is constructed in 30 ropanies land of Institute of Engineering at Pulchowk. It was funded by HMG/Nepal. The building has 3 and half floors which includes CES administration offices, classrooms, research cubicles, labs/ workshop and 4 comfortable guest rooms totaling 20,000 square feet.

Solar Hot Water System

Hot water in the building is provided by the highly efficient Solar Hot Water Collector made of Vacuum tube. There is also a copper fin collector solar water heating system. The speciality of the system is the provision of the research to be carried out by the students.

Solar Kitchen

The campus canteen has adopted an innovative idea of using solar energy for its cooking energy need. Two solar panels with small glass mirrors installed, focus the sun radiation to the kitchen window. Where it heats up the cooking vessel. About 200 students of the hostel is currently being served by the canteen which is using the solar panel for water boiling.

Biogas Plant

The canteen kitchen is also using biogas energy for its cooking purpose. A 6m3 plant is being fed with the kitchen waste and is providing biogas for 1.5 hour a day to the canteen kitchen. A biogas plant based on night soil is under construction.

Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS)

The biomass lab of the ZEH has installed several kind of improved cooking stoves which is popular in the remote areas for its energy efficient and smokeless characteristics. One can see different kinds of ICS in the lab as well as the ongoing researches in the cooking stoves.

Briquettes, Charcoal, Biocoal and Gasifier

Inside biomass lab, one can easily see and understand the briquettes, charcoals, biocoal and also the devices to make these products. Researches are undergoing in an improved version of the biomass gasifier, an efficient, smokeless burner that can be used for large cardamom drying.

Biofuel

Inside the biofuel lab, a collection of various kinds of biofuel is nicely maintained. Various research on biofuel is ongoing. Trees bearing seeds that contain oils are planned to be planted in the nearby energy park. The venture is fascinated by the name “ Above the ground Petroleum Mining (AGPM)”.
